Discovering Roseto Valfortore
A village suspended in time
Roseto Valfortore, a picturesque village in the heart of the Dauni Mountains, is an ideal destination for those seeking experiential tourism in Foggia, amidst culture, tradition, and authenticity. Here, events and festivals become a true journey into local identity: an opportunity to experience folk rituals, typical flavors, crafts, and music up close, sharing moments with the community that reveal the history and soul of the town.
Historic Center of Roseto Valfortore
Experiential tourism in Roseto offers a deep immersion in the traditions, history, and nature of this rich region. The visit begins in the heart of the historic center, where ancient artisan workshops, now transformed into museums, tell the story of the manual labor and creativity of Roseto's inhabitants.
Our shops: treasure chests of tradition
These workshops are living testimonies to a bygone era when craftsmanship was the beating heart of daily life. Each tool, each handcrafted piece, tells the story of generations of artisans who passed down their knowledge, thus creating a direct link to the past.
The Churches
Leaving the Mother Church, next to the Arco della Terra, you'll see an external staircase leading to the Church of San Filippo Neri, which houses the precious silver bust of the saint, patron saint of Roseto. This church is one of the very few in Italy located on the first floor of another building. The first and truly precious archaeological document that Roseto possesses is the funerary cippus embedded in the wall at the corner between the Church of San Filippo Neri and the Arco della Terra.

Behind the Mother Church, two high-relief tombstones can be admired, walled in Via Sottosanti, depicting a nobleman and a noblewoman asleep in the slumber of death. Roseto boasts an extraordinary heritage of sacred buildings that testify to the deep Christian roots of its inhabitants and its tradition of popular piety. There are ten churches and places of worship. Among them, we note the small Association Chapel located within "Villa Frassati-Don Nicolino De Renzis," which was created to welcome and spiritually educate the Catholic Action Youth of Roseto, founded by the beloved priest Don Nicolino, who recently passed away.
The ancient straw oven
One of the most fascinating aspects is the presence of the ancient straw oven, still in operation. This historic structure not only bears witness to the traditions and techniques of the past, but continues to be used for festivals and events, offering visitors a true journey back in time.
Bread making techniques
This place not only allows you to observe centuries-old breadmaking techniques, but also offers the opportunity to taste products made according to traditional recipes, creating a direct link between the past and the present through taste.
Open-air rural theatre
Continuing along Via Coste, you'll come across the Open-Air Theater, a natural escarpment housing a series of steps with a capacity of approximately 800 seats. It's a prime example of how architectural restoration can create new spaces for social gatherings and culture. The structure, harmoniously integrated into the natural escarpment, becomes the setting for cultural events and performances that enrich the village's tourist offerings.
Water mills
The landscape of Roseto Valfortore is a true gem, dotted with splendid ancient watermills, silent witnesses to an industrious and laborious past. These structures were built near the various natural springs and numerous waterways that characterize the area, exploiting the abundance of these resources for their operation.
These mills operated until the 1950s, after which they were gradually abandoned. However, the "upstream mill," thanks to significant restoration efforts sponsored by the municipality, has been transformed into a living monument to industrial archaeology, becoming home to the Museum of Ancient Art. This museum houses a vast collection that narrates local history through everyday objects and work tools from the past.
Mill at Monte and Valle
The mill building upstream stands out for its architectural beauty, with a majestic dovecote tower rising above it. Next to it, a lower section of the building housed the heart of the milling operation: the millstones, which were powered by the water from the stream flowing just below the structure. This same stream, a little further downstream, also powered a second mill, known as the "valley mill," before flowing into the Fortore River.
After a careful restoration process, the two watermills have been returned to their former splendor.
Furthermore, the ancient water collection tanks, once used to power the mills, have been transformed into swimming pools, offering a relaxing and pleasant attraction during the hot summer months.
I Mulini Swimming Pool
Piscina I Mulini is located in a former watermill dating back to the 19th century, transformed into an oasis of peace and relaxation. Situated in a unique landscape, it offers the opportunity to spend relaxing days immersed in the lush nature that surrounds it. Here, you'll find a swimming pool completely immersed in greenery, a true haven of blue nestled among the picturesque Dauni Mountains.

Apennine Ecology Observatory
The Apennine Ecology Observatory, located in Vico Donatelli, represents another highlight of experiential tourism in Roseto Valfortore. This center, dedicated to the study and dissemination of knowledge about the Apennine wolf, offers visitors the unique opportunity to experience this fascinating animal in a responsible and informed way, contributing to raising awareness of its conservation. The Observatory is divided into two sections: the scientific section and the educational section, which houses the "Il Lupo" Environmental Experience Center, part of the INFEA network of the Ministry of the Environment.
Petrera picnic area
The area, located in a park on the outskirts of town, is a popular destination for visitors and nature enthusiasts seeking direct contact with the natural environment. This site is particularly important due to its high naturalistic value, which not only contributes to the conservation of biodiversity but also has significant social and tourism implications.
Through its natural beauty, the area offers a unique opportunity for environmental education and awareness of nature conservation, attracting people of all ages seeking tranquility and scenic beauty.
